Lions Club Rain Barrel Fundraiser |
|
As a new fundraiser this Spring, the Springfield Noon Lions Club is selling rain barrels at discounted prices. Plastic 55-gallon rain barrels are available in black, blue, grey, and terra cotta for $70. Oak 54-gallon rain barrels are available for $155 if they are unfinished and $170 if they are refinished. Accessories such as downspout diverters and pedestals are also available. The brochure and order form can be viewed at www.springfieldnoonlions.com. Color photographs of the rain barrels are available at www.upcycle-products.com. Orders will be taken from April 1 until May 10. Rain barrels will be available for pick up on May 18 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 829 South 11th Street, Springfield (at the former Glass Specialty location). Customers of City Water, Light & Power may be eligible for a $25 rebate. |

CARILLON TOURS AND FREE CONCERTS |

The Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon, in Washington Park, will re-open for tours on Saturday, May 4. The Rees Carillon, a 12-story tower with three observation decks, offers spectacular views of Washington Park and Springfield from the city’s highest point of elevation. Tours are offered every 30 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm. There is one tour on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. New this year, every tour includes a live carillon performance. Adults - $3.25 and children - $2.50.
The new expanded free schedule of concerts begins this Wednesday, May 1. Concerts are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 pm and Sundays at 3:00 and 7:00 pm. Each concert is 30 minutes in length. Robin Austin, the Park District’s Carillonneur plays a wide variety of classical, folk and popular songs. Enjoy the beauty of Washington Park and the

High Tunnel Build Workshop |

Lincoln Land Community College’s Green Center is holding a high tunnel build workshop Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free two-day workshop is being held in the community garden behind the Workforce Careers Center on the LLCC-Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Road.
Participants in the workshop will assist in erecting a 30-foot x 48-foot movable high tunnel (greenhouse) on V-track, in addition to learning about season extension growing practices. The workshop is being led by Four Season Tools. The nationally recognized company builds year-round organic vegetable farms, specializing in constructing high tunnels and educating individuals about season extension for economic viability of small-scale sustainable farms.
Farmers, representatives from schools and universities, community garden leaders, and other individuals wanting to learn about growing food year-round are invited to learn more about high tunnels. High tunnel greenhouses can increase crop profits by improving yields and extending the growing season. Additionally, high tunnel greenhouses can provide more crop protection from weather, diseases and pests than field grown crops.

Eighty-four pieces of selected artwork created by Sangamon County elementary, middle and high school students are being exhibited. The display represents the work of students from 32 schools in Sangamon County, selected by area art teachers.
